Renewables surpassed coal for energy generation in the US in 2019, as coal usage fell to its lowest level in 42 years. The last time a renewable energy source — wood, in this case — was more widely used than coal was 1885, the same year Mark Twain published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. “Coal is on the way out, we are seeing the end of coal.”
