If you’ve ever had a beer you know all those bubbles you are drinking will find a way out… it’s the same when brewing the stuff. Fermentation produces excess carbonation — better known as CO2, a potent greenhouse gas. Large brewers recycle the gas, but that technology has been financially out-of-reach for smaller operations. Enter Earthly Labs, an Austin-based company that developed a way for micro-brewers to recycle CO2 efficiently. Recycling CO2 from fermentation also created a whole new business for breweries: selling the excess gas to indoor cannabis growers. Turns out growing pot indoors requires CO2. “It really was a perfect pairing, especially for Colorado. We’ve got a lot of breweries. We got a lot of cannabis operations.”
