As much as “75% of freshwater originates as snow” in the Western United States and accurate measurement of snowpack is key to effective water management. A new study by researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder, suggests snowpack data will become less reliable in the future. “As temperatures increase with climate change and snow turns to rain, snowpacks will get smaller, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s less water available.” It does mean that it is harder to measure, adding to the many challenges water managers in the Western US already face.
