Amid confirmed outbreaks among fishing industry workers, the National Marine Fisheries Service “has barred some of its employees from making formal reference to the COVID-19 pandemic in documents available to the public without preapproval from leadership.” According to a NMFS memo written June 22, the “preferred approach” to discussing the pandemic in publicly available documents is to “make no reference to anything COVID related.” When asked about the memo, a spokesman “did not explain why the agency prefers to avoid mention of the pandemic.
