“From smartphones and computers to refrigerators and air conditioners,” electronics are a modern convenience on which we all depend. But all that convenience comes at a price: trash. We generated more than 53 million metric tonnes of e-waste globally last year— 21% more than just five years ago — and only a small fraction is recycled. “What is most concerning is not only the quantity of e-waste that is arising, but also the fact that recycling technologies are not keeping pace with the growing amount of e-waste.”
