A collapsed fuel reservoir at a power plant near Russian city of Norilsk sent more than 20,000 tonnes — approximately 190,000 barrels — of diesel fuel into the Ambarnaya River on Friday. President Vladimir Putin declared a state of emergency “in order to call up more resources for the cleanup effort” and a Russian government committee launched multiple investigations into the accident. “The spill will be difficult to clean up because [the Ambarnaya] is too shallow to use barges and the remote location has no roads.”
