The coronavirus-induced lockdown brought life as we know to a screeching halt, causing massive disruption and economic damage. The world became — for a brief time — a much quieter place. “With planes downed, cars parked, trains stopped, cruise ships docked, and concerts canceled, it has been estimated that the Earth’s human-induced vibrations were reduced by 50 percent between March and May of 2020.” Not surprisingly, the greatest reductions were felt in the most densely populated places, but scientists also found the effects of “Anthropause” in some of the quietest places on earth.
